Few know better than the Taliban what a relentless foe the Islamic State’s affiliate in Afghanistan can be. Much of the West considers the Taliban, which reclaimed power in the country in 2021, to be an extremist Islamic movement. But the Islamic State Khorasan, the affiliate that took responsibility for a terrorist attack in suburban Moscow on Friday, has slammed the Taliban government, calling the group’s version of Islamic rule insufficiently hard-line. The Islamic State Khorasan, or ISIS-K, is one of the last significant antagonists that the Taliban face in Afghanistan. In the months after the Taliban seized power, ISIS-K carried out near daily attacks on their soldiers at roadside checkpoints and in neighborhoods that are home to the country’s Hazara ethnic minority.

That includes over one million Afghans, many of whom the Pakistan government says have been involved in militant attacks and crime. "This is worse than prison," said a 22-year-old Afghan man who said he ensured the lights remained off at night. Some locals who are helping the Afghans arrange for food and water to be secretly smuggled into the shelter under the cover of night.

Procesul s-a bazat în mare parte pe mărturia unui alt refugiat afgan, care acum nu mai este de găsit şi prin urmare nu a fost prezent la proces. Violenţele între grupuri rivale de migranţi erau frecvente în tabăra de la Moria, unde în martie 2020 circa 20.000 de migranţi erau înghesuiţi în condiţii de igienă deplorabile şi izolaţi din cauza pandemiei.

Tariq Arian, purtător de cuvânt al Ministerului de Interne afgan, a spus că cel puțin 52 de oameni au fost răniți, majoritatea studenți. Explozia de sâmbătă nu a fost revendicată până acum. Deflagrația s-a produs în vestul orașului Kabul, într-un cartier locuit în mare parte de șiiți, care a fost ținta mai multor atacuri desfășurate de militanții ISIS în ultimii ani.
